Not what I expected (GBE 2 week #1)

I came home from work this morning excited to get working on this blog.

I'm on my second cup of coffee and....nothing.  I'm stuck and I'm not sure what exactly I want to write about.

I totally expected this to be easy.

But just like every other aspect of life--not much turns out exactly as you expect it to.

I expected that by age 35, I'd have my life figured out.  I'd have a career that brought in the big bucks.  Maybe have a sweet little house with a garden and two new-ish cars in the garage.  2.5 kids and a dog....maybe a chihuauha named Poquito Tito or a rottie named Ernest.  My son would play a sport and my daughter would be our little princess.

I never expected to have a job that I adore at a company I despise.

I never expected to go back to college in my 30's.  And once I did...I never expected to get a B- in Intro to Nursing (didn't you know...I'm straight A's all the way?  Or so I thought!)

Those 2.5 kids turned into 4.  One is a computer geek with a passion for anime and WWII.  Another is on the autism spectrum.  He's celebrates EVERY holiday and even makes up more...because really...we could all use more celebration in our lives--right?  He does an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression that almost brings tears to my eyes.  The littlest is so charming....he can almost get away with murder--he'll make a great politician someday :) And I got a daughter whose idea of fun is dressing up like a zombie (she's my goth princess!).  Oh yeah, and the dog turned out to be a five year old cat named Chaos that pees on everything we own.  Seriously.

But you know what?  I hate sports.  I am so not the soccer mom type!  I love makeup and holidays and cheesy celebrity impressions.  I love each of them the way they are and I wouldn't change them for anything.  Ok...maybe I'd make them a little neater--their rooms are a wreck!

I love school and I think that I appreciate the education that I'm getting more than I would have when I was younger.

And I know that it won't be much longer before I can ditch the job and say hello to my career.  Who knows, maybe that house isn't so far off in the future either.

Most things don't turn out like you expect them too...but that's OK because what you get usually turns out to be just fine--if not even better than you could have ever expected.

And if you just take a deep breath and go with the flow....things you thought were going to be difficult usually happen without you even realizing it.

Just like this blog.

  2. Love the sound of your kids! I have an anime freak, a WoW freak, an MMORPG freak and a survival horror game freak.... maybe it was something I ate during pregnancy? Wouldn't change 'em, and I know how you feel on that score :)

  3. Great post about expectations!!

We have a lot in common. I went back to school in my late 20's early 30's and was a mom of one. Then had 3 more while attending college (I was on the long term plan) and then had my fifth after.

I also have a child on the autism spectrum. She's 12 and I've learned so much just by being blessed to be her mom!

Nice to meet you here...I look forward to reading more :)

  4. Uh huh, I agree. Go with the flow. I wish my kids' rooms were neater too. Glad to hear we have that in common. :-)

  5. That's a pretty good post for having "nothin'"!

  6. Exactly...we have to go with life's flow... it's rarely what we "expected" it to be and that in the end is perfect!

  8. You are one of my very favorite people for a number of reasons. You're brilliant, funny, wise, loving, nerdilicious, and refreshingly normal (whatever that is). This blog just goes to prove how cool you really are.

  9. I'm so into this! I'm 37, step-mom of three, each so unique. I look forward to your future posts as well!

  11. Your life sounds wonderful. My youngest granddaughter, (12), also is on the autism spectrum. She loves anime and is a joy to be around! Your kids and their Mom are true blessings in each others lives! Great write!

  12. I can tell by this blog alone that you have an incredible outlook on life and know how to handle it day by day, the good, the bad and the messy. ;-) 4 kids and college..under those circumstances I would consider that B- and A all the way! College studies are difficult enough without the distractions. I think you are doing just fine and you have my respect. Your kids sound like they each have their own interesting and creative personalities. Very cool!

  13. I'm going to be 60 this year and because life keeps throwing me curve balls, I have to keep changing my expectations. I long for peace as I write from the deck of my home on a lake (in my imagination) in hopes that one day my imagination will meet my expectations ;) Nice blog.

  14. @spedmom Thanks! I'm glad you liked it :)

@montanalady I'm happy I met your expectations...you're too funny! *smiles*

@Mojo Writin You're kids sound great!

@Jenn It certainly sounds like we have a lot in common. My son with ASD is 9 and, while it isn't always easy, I wouldn't have it any other way. He's taught me so much about patience, acceptance and a host of other things!

  15. @Jean has been shopping Your girls must be getting sooo big! The room thing is probably wishful thinking and will never be neat enough LOL

@Mike Thanks! Sometimes when I just sit down and start typing good things happen :)

@Marian Couldn't agree with you more!

@Pbquig I don't know exactly what I want to do with my nursing education as yet...my job is healthcare related already...but I KNOW I don't want to work in long term care. But then again things don't always turn out like you expect them to

  16. @Word Nerd Awwww Beth that was sooo nice of you to say!!! What a self-confidence boost that was!! You're pretty cool yourself :)

@MrsWilk Thank You so much!! I love how each kid has their own unique personality...don't you?

@Kathy Thanks, I'm glad you liked it :)

@Gary I think my life is pretty spiffy. I'm sure it could stand for some improvements here and there but overall I'm pretty happy. Oh...and I love that you're 'gawysmiff'...that's just too cute!

  17. @Dances with Vodka I *try* to have a positive outlook and keep things together...sometimes it works and sometimes, well...not so much :) Up until that B- I had a 4.0 so I was pretty sad but considering that most of my class failed (anything less than a C is failing) I figure that B- is ok by me!

@Theresa Wiza I hope that one day your imagination will meet your expectations too. Maybe for myself as well :)

  18. This is great, it sounds like you have fabulous children. I try to do what you do, take a deep breath and go with the flow. Things always have a way of turning out okay. Hearts in Fur Coats

  25. Great post! Your typing fingers didn't listen to that blank mind a bit - they knew just what to do with expectations. :)

  26. @Alana That's what happens sometimes...I just take a deep breath and start typing, and maybe I get a nice blog out of it :)

  27. Amazing how much we have in common, even if you are young enough to be my kid. : - ) Got my degree at 46 and went on to work 17 years at the job I dreamed about when I graduated from high school. My younger daughter just got her master's in nursing--at 42. My grandkids are REALLY into anime (check out my blog), and my grandson has Asperger's. He has a wonderful sense of humor and a quirky way of looking at things that stretches my mind. Not to mention an incredible memory for obscure facts. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

  28. That's awesome! :-) You know what's funny? I don't even remember how I initially expected my life would turn out by this time (36).

    ReplyDelete
  29. @eccentricity I had a vague expectation about how things would turn out. A psychic once told me that I'd marry a workaholic and be quite comfortable financially with my 2 kids...oh and my husband would have very dark hair and very light eyes...yep not so much!

  31. LOL! I totally love that you have a cat named Chaos...what a great name! And it's always nice to see somebody who shares a ..hate..for sports! I was starting to feel like I was the only person left that cant stand watching them on tv! I can tell you are a very proud mother of four wonderful children :-) Zombies FTW! ;)
